Notes for William JONES
Lived at Fulwood Lodge, 61 Aigburth Drive, Aigburth, Liverpool. A Liverpool Merchant and founder in 1813 of Willm. Jones & Co insurance brokers. Patron of the Living of St Michael’s-in the Hamlet, 1845 onwards. Chairman of the Liverpool Underwriters Association, 1836. Fulwood Lodge is now a grade II listed building.

He was described by Edward Stewart-Jones, his son, in his manuscript history of the Sea Insurance Company written in 1896 as an “eager energetic personality”.

He added:“his influence was remarkable among a wide circle of friends. He was far from confining his interest to business alone. He took a strong religious line on the questions of the day and was deeply immersed in educational and philanthropic projects such as the foundation of the Liverpool College, the Sailors’ Home and th building of 5 or 6 of the principal churches of the town.”

Lived in retirement at Sussex House, Upper Norwood, Surrey (see probate records) and left £70,000 in his will. Over £6/7million in today’s money.
