Notes for Ruth JONES
Inherited Rackery Hall from her father and bequeathed it on her death to her cousin Richard Jones. There is a marriage settlement between her father Richard Jones anbd Griffith Speed dated 1750 which is in Ruthin Record Office.

Her Will was proved at St Asaph and a copy is held in the National Library of Wales33. TC-J’s records include a copy.

“In the name of God I Ruth Speed of Wrexham in the County of Denbigh Widow being of sound mind memory and understanding (praise be God) do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following-First I give devise and bequesth my capital and other Messuages Lands tenemements and hereditaments with their and every of their appurtenances in the several parishes of Gresford, Wrexham or elsewhere in said county of Denbigh unto William Lloyd Junior of Plas Power in the county of Denbigh esq and Thomas Jones of Llantisilio 34in the said county of Denbigh esq and to their heirs and assigns subject to the several uses and estates and to and for the several interests and purposes hereinafter particularly limitted (sic) and declared touuching the same respectively, that is to say, As to for and concerning-All those messuages, tenements and lands with the appurtenances situate lying and being in the parish of Gresford aforesaid and now in the several holdings or occupations of Richard Williams, John Jones and Thomas Griffiths yeoman- Also the several closes or parcels of land in the Parish of Wrexham aforesaid in the said county of Denbigh (called yr.....being part of my estates)-In Trust to permit and suffer Mary Griffith spinster (Eldest daugter of my cozen Elin Griffith deceased who was the late wife of Thomas Griffith of Chester coal merchant and youngest daughter of my late uncle Thomas Jones of Pen y Galtegva near Ruthin in the county of Denbigh deceased) and her assigns for and during the term of her natural life to have take and enjoy out of all and evey the said messuages tenements and lands with their appurtenances the clear yearly annuity of rent charge of Ten pounds to be paid to her the said Mary Griffiths or her assigns yearly and evey year by even and half yearly payments-viz on the feasts of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Michael the Archangel, the first payment therof to be made upon such of the feast days as shall happen next after my decease-And in the said annuity or rent charge etc etc”

Effect of Will:
1)To devise all land in Wrexham and land in the holding of Thomas Griffiths, Richard Wiliams and John Jones to John Jones son subject to £10 rentcharge to Mary Griffith and £1000 to Anne Griffith

2) To devise all land in Gresford in Ruth Speed’s ownership to Richard Jones subject to £200 rentcharge to Mary Jones

3) To Devise all land in Mrs Weston’s holding to John Griffith

4) Personal Estate bequeathed to Richard Jones and Anne Griffith

5) Devise of land in holding of Thomas Evans Evans to Richard Griffith

However Anne Griffith died before Ruth Speed and a codicil35 was made:

1) Mrs Rebecca Essex Gartside was substituted as executor

2)The rentcharge of £1000 was split into smaler legacies one of which to Mary Griffiths of £200 another to Mary Gislingham (nee Jones) and daughter of Magdalen Jones £20

3) Silver and clothes to REG. Linen furniture at Llay and all farm goods to Richard Jones
