First Baronet. Cloth merchant. In 1745 he raised a corps of 100 men at his own expense during the '45 Uprising. He held the office of High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1746. He was created 1st Baronet Ibbetson [Great Britain] on 12 May 1748. Mayor of Leeds in 1753.

Fathered 10 children of whom 3 failed to survive infancy.
