Became interested in medicine, and undertook duty as a volunteer among cholera patients on board a ship outside New York harbour.
Subsequently studied in the Post Graduate Laboratories of Cornell University.
M.D. (Cornell). Took up microscopic pathology, and made an intensive study in the preparation and microphotography of tissues.
Professor of Bacteriology in Cornell University Medical College until 1912; made notable investigations into the bacteriology of erysipelas and of the typhoid fevers.
Of Fox Warren, Cobham, Surrey, and of The Manor House, Byfleet, Surrey.
Worked at the Royal Horticultural Society's laboratory as a voluntary worker, collaborating at Wisley with Dr O. V. Darbishire in the investigation of the colour pigments of plants, 1922-32.
Shared with Dr Darlington, of the John Innes Horticultural Research Station, the credit for a new species of foxglove – 'Digitalis Mertonensis.' Died Dec. 5, 1934, aged 82, at Churchstow, South Devon.
