Notes for Daniel George GOYDER CBE
He was one of the most distinguished practitioners and teachers of European competition law of his generation. He combined a remarkable intelligence with an unimpeachable character and generosity of spirit.

He was born in 1938, the oldest son of George and Rosemary Goyder. George Goyder was the pioneer of business ethics (his The Responsible Company was published in 1961). Dan was educated at Rugby and venerated Sir Arthur fforde, the Headmaster, to whom he later dedicated his EEC Competition Law (1988).

Reading Law at Trinity College, Cambridge, he met Canon Eric James, the college chaplain, who became a lifelong friend. Goyder and several others lodged at James's vicarage in Camberwell, south-east London, in the early 1960s. Goyder threw himself into social work in the area.
In 1962 Dan Goyder married Jean Dohoo, and was admitted as a solicitor, having served his articles with Allen & Overy. Awarded a Harkness Commonwealth Fund Fellowship, he then spent two years at Harvard and Berkeley. It was a key period. Goyder developed an enthusiasm for US antitrust law ("competition law" in Europe), which led to a later collaboration with Sir Alan Neale, on the third edition of Neale's The Antitrust Laws of the USA (1981).
Between 1964 and 1967 he worked as an assistant solicitor at Allen & Overy. The Goyders then moved to East Anglia, where Dan was a partner of Birketts, in Ipswich, from 1968 to 1983. From 1983 to the end of his life, he was a consultant to the firm, where he was popular with his colleagues.
The world of competition law, however, beckoned. In 1980 Goyder was appointed a member of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC), serving until 1997. It is believed that he was the longest-serving member ever. Inquiries in which he participated included that into the supply of beer, between 1986 and 1989, and others featuring intellectual property, in which he was a specialist - for example, the BBC/ITV programmes-listings inquiry in 1985.
He was appointed a Deputy Chairman of the MMC in 1991, serving until 1997, and presided, with a quiet courtesy but complete authority, over 24 inquiries. The most significant was the comprehensive year-long investigation into British Gas in 1992 and 1993. The eventual report ran to four volumes and proved highly influential for the future of the sector.
From 1981 Goyder had been teaching European Competition law part-time at Essex University. He put his expertise at the MMC's disposal, at a time when the connection between the domestic and European systems was becoming ever closer.
In parallel with his work at the MMC, Goyder was a Visiting Professor at Essex University between 1991 and 1997 and at King's College London between 1991 and 2003. From 2001 he was also a Senior Fellow of the Centre for European Legal Studies at Cambridge and at the time of his death was an Affiliated Lecturer at the University of East Anglia.
The fourth edition of his leading textbook EEC Competition Law, renamed EC Competition Law, was launched at a party at King's to coincide with Goyder's retirement from his professorship in the autumn of 2003. It was a joyous event.
After Goyder retired from the MMC, he was a consultant to Linklaters and had important roles in his diocese, St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, serving as Chairman of the Board of Finance between 1977 and 1985 and as an honorary Lay Canon between 1987 and 1993.

Dan Goyder's many friends were delighted to learn in January this year that he had been appointed to serve as a member of the panel of part-time chairmen of the Competition Appeal Tribunal. But he never sat as a chairman. He was already ill with the cancer from which he died.
