“The desire to leave cash to gentry daughters could lead to a juggling of
scarce resources. In 1655 David Lloyd Meredith of Cwmbwa had to provide for
two sons and three daughters still at home.20 He manipulated leases, corn,
debts and a bond for £ 80 from his son-in-law in order to provide £ 40 for
Margaret as a marriage portion, so long as she married, with family approval,
within three years, in which case, however, she would have no share of the
goods and chattels. By 1662 family circumstances were a little easier; when
David's heir, Meredith Lloyd of Cwmbwa, died in that year, he was able to
leave £ 80 to his two daughters, Magdalen and Dorothy, as well as all his stock; there were no sons”
