He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1915 in the service of the Royal Garrison Artillery.1 He fought in the First World War between 1915 and 1918.1 He graduated from King's College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1922 with a Master of Arts (M.A.).He was a Fellow between 1923 and 1928 at Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Hampshire in 1934. He gained the rank of Major in the service of the Royal Artillery.1 He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1945. He held the office of Assistant Military Attaché to Madrid between 1940 and 1945.1 He was invested as a Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.).1 He held the office of Vice-Chairman of Hampshire County Council in 1948.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of Hampshire in 1949.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Hampshire in 1951. He held the office of Chairman of Hampshire County Council between 1955 and 1967.1 He was invested as a Knight in 1963.
