Adviser to Ferdinand II of Naples and lived at Antibes.

Went to Sicily in 1819 and subsequently to Naples where he established a merchant business in 1856 when Naples was still a kingdom. Many prominent London investment, banking and issuing houses called themselves merchants ­

James Close became adviser to King Ferdinand II of Naples, for which he received the distinguished title of "Cavaliere." He also wrote a treatise on education and his views on education influenced his supervision of his six sons and three daughters.

When King Ferdinand II of Naples died in 1859, James Close retired to spend more time sailing and died himself of a heart attack six years later while staying at the family home in Antibes.
