Notes for Irene Florence COX
Twin with Charles Cotton Bridges.

Was given G. Ellacombe’s “Book of Photos & Journeys” by Isabella Margaret and left it to her nephew Peter K Cox

from whom it found its way to my uncle Peter Kenwrick Cox, then to his son and then to me. I mention all this because it shows there are at least three people who could have polluted the annotations and I'm not absolutely certain that I've correctly distinguished the various handwritings, some of them on scraps of paper inserted between various album pages.

Inscribed on the first album page is "G. Ellacombe Book of Photos & Journeys, given to M. I. Bealey by G. Ellacombe April 1899". A letter enclosed is from Margaret to Irene mentioning Irene's mother (and my ggm) Louisa Florence Bridges (12th or 13th child of JW Bridges and Harriet Hanson, she was a twin with her brother Charles Cotton Bridges) and identifying her in one of the photos taken at the orchard at Birch ( in Essex if I'm not mistaken) along with JW Bridges, Harriet and several other relatives. I mention this because JW is clearly the same man on the left of this photo, standing to Mary's right.

A typed looseleaf page was adjacent to the photo, which I think was authored by my uncle. He mentions "photograph of four generations of the Bridges family ... taken by Cogan, 38 Milsom Street, Bath" and " taken ... before 1863 because 1 and 2 [ Mary Wilson and George Wilson Bridges her first son both died in 1863 ] died in that year. ... I have a photo of Mary Bridges (nee Wilson) wearing much the same clothes and cap, and looking very similar, which is labelled as having been taken by the Reverend Lockley Swainson at Bath in 1855". But if my uncle wrote that in the 1980's he may well have been in his dotage by then and mangled the transcription. Perhaps the photo my uncle mentioned was actually taken by the Rev Lockley you have in mind. Probably the note was typed by my aunt Hildegard so for all I know, the transcription should have read "Rev. Lockey, Swainswick"! If so, I think I know who has it, a cousin who I think is also in his dotage, but if you're interested I could try to reach him or perhaps his daughter who he once told me has some interest in family history. (I'd also be very happy to get rid of the album, beat up as it is, as once it's scanned I won't ever need it and I'm not sentimental about physical heirlooms.)

Of interest to me is that it seems my uncle completely mis-identified his own ggf and my 2nd ggf, JW Bridges, younger brother of the rather notorious George Wilson Bridges. Either way, it's always a thrill for me when I find another photo of an ancestor or his or her close relative.”
