Notes for Sir Arthur HOLLAND
Holland Garden was a gift to the people of the Borough from Lady Holland in 1928. Sir
Arthur and Dame Mary Catherine Barbara Holland were well-known and highly respected
residents in Wimbledon who were well know for the tireless service to the local
community.

Sir Arthur founded Wimbledon and Mitcham Library in 1888, was President of Wimbledon
Football Club, and was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace in 1893. Following his death
in January 1928, Dame Holland decided to give the Borough a place for the community to
enjoy in dedication of her husband.

The Holland family house, Holmhurst (now demolished), was located at the top of the hill
near Westside Tennis Club. The family owned a large plot on the corner of Pepys Road
and Cottenham Park Road that included an orchard, kitchen garden and paddock.
