Notes for Charles BARKLEY
Commander of the East India Company’s ship Pacific. Drowned at sea.

The record of his death is in the British Library, East India Company records (IOR/L/MAR/B/497D) for the "Pacific", Captain Charles Barkley's ship on his journey 1773/4.  The Journal for the "Pacific" at 14/8/1774 states:  “From Ceylon to Madras.  Sunday 14 August 1774.  At 3am Departed this life Captain Charles Barkley of a fever – having been ill six days only – at Noon committed his Body to the Deep”.  The Journal mentions the ship being near Friars Hood, Ceylon [a mountain] visible from the ship.  The Journal states he was succeeded by James Williamson Chief Mate, who writes the Journal.

The separate “Pacific” Ledger also gave the date of death on 14/8/1774 and gave pay details of wages for 6 months 16 days, total £65 6s 8d, pay started on 29/1/1774 to be paid to his Executor, John Barkley.
