Adopted by Major William Bird as his heir, inherited his estate and changed his name to Bird by Royal Licence in 1809
as follows: The King has been graciously pleased to grant William Charles Lewis Esq., Capt. in the Military Service of the East India Company... that he and his issue my take the surname Bird, in addition to his present name of Lewis, with the consent of William Bird Esq., Major in the Royal West Middlesex Regiment of Militia. And to order that His Majesty's Concession and Declaration be registered in the College of Arms."
The official name-change took place on the 15th December 1810.
