Notes for Major William BIRD POSSIBLY AKA LEWIS
On his death he left the majority of his estate to William Charles Lewis who by consent of the King changed his name to Bird no doubt as a condition of inheriting th estate. Query whether he was his illegitimate son.
The King has been graciously pleased to grant William Charles Lewis Esq., Capt. in the Military Service of the East India Company... that he and his issue my take the surname Bird, in addition to his present name of Lewis, with the consent of William Bird Esq., Major in the Royal West Middlesex Regiment of Militia. And to order that His Majesty's Concession and Declaration be registered in the College of Arms."
The official name-change took place on the 15th December 1810,
